Etsy photo size guide: dimensions that actually work

The image sizes Etsy rewards in 2026: 2000 px on the shortest side, 4:3 ratio, under 1 MB. What each rule protects you from and how to batch resize free.

Etsy publishes recommendations rather than hard rejections, which is why bad image sizes hurt quietly: nothing blocks your upload, but your photos come out blurry in search, cropped in thumbnails, or fail to zoom. These are the numbers that matter and what each one protects you from.

The numbers

Setting Recommended value What happens if you ignore it
Resolution At least 2000 px on the shortest side Zoom looks soft, search thumbnails blur
Aspect ratio (first photo) 4:3 landscape, or square Etsy crops your composition for you
File size Under 1 MB Uploads stall or fail, pages load slower
Format JPG or PNG (no transparency), GIF HEIC and WebP are refused at upload
Color sRGB Colors shift on other screens
Count 10 photos per listing, use at least 5 Fewer angles, weaker conversion

A 3000 x 2250 px JPEG is a comfortable master size: 4:3, well above the resolution floor, and small enough to compress under 1 MB.

Why the first photo's ratio matters most

Your first photo becomes the listing thumbnail, and Etsy displays it differently depending on where the shopper is: roughly square in desktop search results, closer to 4:3 on mobile. Compose the first photo with your product centered and with breathing room on both sides, so every crop keeps it whole. If your thumbnails keep coming out beheaded, the dedicated guide on fixing Etsy thumbnail crops covers the crop behavior in detail.

Resize a whole listing in one pass

  1. Open the Etsy product image resizer. Its preset outputs 2000 px on the shortest side, on a clean white ground, as JPEG.
  2. Drop all the photos for the listing, up to 50 at once. Processing happens in your browser: nothing is uploaded to any server, which also makes it fast.
  3. Download the finished set as a ZIP and upload it to your Etsy listing in your chosen order.

For lifestyle and detail shots where you want to keep the original background and composition, use the bulk image resizer with a 2000 px target instead: it only scales, it never re-frames.

Keep files under 1 MB

Etsy recommends staying under roughly 1 MB per photo, and sellers on slow connections report uploads hanging above that. Size in pixels is the main lever: a 2000 px JPEG at reasonable quality lands well under 1 MB, while a 6000 px camera original does not. Resizing down to the recommended resolution usually solves the weight problem in the same step. The guide on getting Etsy photos under 1 MB has the full checklist if a file stays stubbornly heavy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need exactly 2000 px?

No, 2000 px on the shortest side is a floor recommendation, not a target to hit exactly. Anything between 2000 and 3000 px works well. Below 1000 px, Etsy's zoom stops working and search thumbnails visibly degrade.

Can I upload iPhone photos directly?

Not if they are HEIC, the iPhone camera default: Etsy refuses the format with a file-type error. Convert to JPG first; the HEIC conversion guide shows the fastest ways and how to make your iPhone shoot JPEG directly.

Does Etsy accept transparent PNGs?

No. Transparent areas get flattened and can render unpredictably. Export product photos on a real background. If you need to replace a messy background with a clean white one, the background remover can output a white ground instead of transparency.

Portrait or landscape for the extra photos?

Etsy's listing page displays photos in a 4:3 landscape viewer. Portrait shots get letterboxed or cropped in previews. Shooting everything in 4:3 landscape, or square for detail shots, keeps the gallery consistent.

Whatever you came to do, it happens on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and none of it costs anything.
