How to stop Etsy from cropping your thumbnails wrong
Etsy shows square thumbnails on desktop and 4:3 on mobile, while its crop tool trims 5:4. How to compose listing photos so every crop keeps them whole.
You upload a carefully composed listing photo and Etsy's search results show your product with the top cut off. The thumbnail adjustment tool does not seem to match what shoppers actually see, and sellers have been reporting exactly that in the Etsy forums for years. The behavior is real, it is inconsistent by design, and you can work around it reliably.
What Etsy actually does to your first photo
Your first listing photo becomes the thumbnail, and it is displayed at different ratios in different places:
| Surface | Ratio shown |
|---|---|
| Etsy's thumbnail adjustment tool | 5:4 (570 x 456 px) |
| Desktop search results | Square, 1:1 |
| Mobile search and app | Roughly 4:3 |
| Listing page main viewer | 4:3 |
The crop tool shows you a 5:4 window, but desktop shoppers see a square. Whatever you framed against the tool's preview loses its left and right edges on desktop, and slightly different slices elsewhere. Etsy has not reconciled these surfaces, so the fix has to happen in your photo, not in their tool.
Compose for the tightest crop
The square desktop crop is the tightest window your photo will pass through. Compose your first photo so the product sits fully inside a centered square:
- Center the product horizontally. Off-center compositions are what get truncated hardest.
- Leave real margin around the product: if it spans more than about 80% of the frame's height, a square crop from a 4:3 photo will clip it.
- Keep critical elements (the product's top, text on packaging) away from the frame edges entirely.
A quick self-check: cover the left and right sixths of your 4:3 photo with your hands. What remains is roughly the desktop thumbnail. If the product survives that, it survives everywhere.
Produce the file at the right size
Once the composition is safe, produce the upload at Etsy's recommended resolution so the thumbnail also stays sharp. The Etsy product image resizer outputs 2000 px on the shortest side as a JPEG, in your browser, up to 50 photos per batch. For photos where the background is cluttered and pulls attention in a small thumbnail, the background remover puts the product on a clean white ground, which reads dramatically better at 100 px than a busy scene.
The full set of recommended dimensions, ratios and file sizes lives in the Etsy photo size guide.
After uploading, verify the real result
Etsy's preview is not the ground truth, so check the surfaces shoppers see. Open your shop in an incognito window on desktop and find the listing in search results, then do the same on your phone. If the crop still clips the product, the composition needs more margin: adjust and re-upload. Do not fight the adjustment tool for more than one attempt; margin in the source photo is the fix that holds.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my thumbnail look stretched, not just cropped?
Sellers occasionally report stretching when the source photo is unusually small or an unusual ratio, forcing Etsy to scale it up in one dimension. Uploading at 2000 px or more on the shortest side, in 4:3 or square, eliminates the conditions where stretching appears.
Should I just upload a square first photo?
A square first photo removes the desktop-crop surprise entirely, and many established shops do exactly that. The trade-off: on mobile and on the listing page, a square photo gets letterboxed or lightly cropped to 4:3. Centered composition with margin works well in both worlds; a square with margin is the most conservative choice.
Does the thumbnail crop affect my search ranking?
Not directly. But the thumbnail is what shoppers click, and a beheaded product photo measurably hurts click-through, which does feed into how Etsy ranks listings over time. Fixing the crop is conversion work, not just cosmetics.
